These Big Ol' Spots are feeding up... literally!
This time of year, I find them cruising just beneath large concentrations of baitfish. These pelagic predators gorge on bait and then just idle below until they want more.
Finding them...
Start by looking in the mouths of creek arms and working your way towards the back. Having good electronics is great, but you don't really need the best for this. Just start scanning for bait by looking for schools of bait balls with your depth finder and by looking for activity on the surface until you find them. Make sure to check channel swings as I included in the picture below!
Now start fishing!!!
Targeting them...
Using the right size bait is key. Don't be afraid to experiment with different sizes of lures. If you control your depth and present your bait (match the hatch) at their depth or just a few feet above, typically right under the bait ball, their brains are programmed to feed, feed & feed this time of year, so it's not likely they are going to pass on an easy meal. The water temps are dropping now into the 60's, so they have no problem showing aggression when they strike!!!!
Tackle Tip...
The Pulse Fish Lures Pulse Jig is a great representation of a baitfish that is in panic after being separated from the school.
Tackle Tip...
Using 100% fluorocarbon line will help keep your presentation in the strike zone longer and help with the invisibility of your line. As for me, I love using the brand "Vicious Fishing" as they make high-quality fishing line that has been proven for me over the years.
A Successful Day...
Being on the water can be therapeutic . On those days when you invest the time, discover a pattern that works, and begin catching fish consistently, your confidence grows, and your enjoyment of fishing reaches a new level, making it undoubtedly a successful day!
